You can design and create a papercraft Dragon Quest monster to render your favourite characters in the game in three dimensions. Dragon Quest is a role playing video game series filled with monster battles. Papercraft is an applied artform that involves colouring, cutting and folding thick paper into representational figures and items. Most papercraft creations last for years and cost less than a dollar to make. Combine papercraft with the imaginative world of Dragon Quest to make a paper monster you are proud of.

  1. 1

Sketch a view of your chosen Dragon Quest monster on a single sheet of blank paper from six different angles: front, back, left side, right side, top and bottom. Make the drawing for each side the same size as the side it apposes for a balanced symmetrical look.

  2. 2

Copy the drawings of the various sides of the monster onto a single sheet of card stock so that the sections that comprise each viewing angle are connected to one another. Extend connected sections an additional half-inch by drawing on tapered end tabs for glue to be applied later. Darken the outlines in ink or use markers to add colour and detail to the panels.

  3. 3

Place the card stock Dragon Quest monster designs on a cutting board and use a utility knife to cut the sections out of the paper. Score the card stock along the line where corners will be folded by lightly running the blade over the surface without pressing it all the way through.

  4. 4

Apply a thin layer of glue to the tapered end tabs and fold and connect the sections of the Dragon Quest monster. Make your last minor colour adjustments or trim away any excess card stock and allow the papercraft to dry for at least an hour without moving. Apply a layer or two of clear finish fixative spray to prevent moisture damage and discolouration.

Tips and warnings

  • Papercraft monsters are lightweight and can be hung from the ceiling with a tack and clear fishing line.
  • Utility knife blades and card stock edges can be very sharp. Keep adhesive bandages nearby whenever working on papercraft projects.
