How to Adjust the Gas Eye on a Stove
A smaller flame is beter for simmering and slow cooking. (gas stove image by Christopher Walker from

A gas stove will heat or cook food more quickly than an electric stove. For foods you want to cook slow and low, you must turn the gas flame down to a low/simmer setting. Occasionally, the gas flame on your stove is too high to do so. You can easily adjust the flame to a level more suitable for simmering with a screwdriver.

Things you need

  1. 1

Turn on the gas eye to the low/simmer flame setting.

  2. 2

Remove the knob from the oven control panel.

  3. 3

Look through the end of the knob's shaft. You will see a small screw embedded inside the shaft.

  4. 4

Use a small screwdriver to turn the screw. Watch the gas flame as you turn the screw. Turning the screw to the right will make the gas flame burn lower. If you want a higher flame, turn the screw to the left.

  5. 5

Replace the gas knob after you are satisfied with the flame level.

Tips and warnings

  • Be careful to stay clear of the flame as you are adjusting the screw. Keep your face, hair, hands, arms and clothing away from the burner.
