Kitchen scales are available in a variety of sizes, colours, weight limits and prices. You can also go for either digital kitchen scales or the manual version. Consumer kitchen scales can measure just small weights, such as up to 900 g (2 lb) or much larger weights up to 5 kg (11 lb). If you have kitchen scales that you have never used before, you won't find the device difficult to read. Whether you have digital kitchen scales or regular kitchen scales, you can get the weight information you need.
Take out something to use for measuring your food. This can be a bowl or plate that you plan to use later, or it could be a piece of foil or a napkin.
Switch on your kitchen scales if it's digital. Place the bowl or other measuring container on the scale so that you can tare it. Taring is checking the weight of the container so that it is not included in the food weight. For manual scales, use the calibration dial while the container is on the scale to reset the scale to zero. For digital scales, just press the tare button.
Place your food in the container. When you do this, you will see the numbers on your digital scale increase, or the hand on the face of the manual scale will move.
Look at the final number once the hand or numbers have stopped moving on the scale. This number is the weight of your food. If you have digital scales, it will say beside the number what the unit of measurement is. On most digital scales, you can press the measurement button to change between different measurement units. If you have manual scales, you can have one or more units listed. Typically, there are rows on the top and the bottom, with each showing a different unit. Just look on the face to see what unit it says each row is and use the measurement unit that you prefer.
