Wall Sconces in a Public Location

When installing wall sconces in a public location, such as an apartment hallway, the American Disability Act requires a minimum height of 6 feet, 8 inches; or 80 inches, from the floor to the bottom of the wall sconce.

Wall Sconces in a Private Home

When installing a wall sconce in a private home the height is not mandatory and can be placed as needed. However, recommended heights vary from as low as 60 inches to as high as 72 inches, depending on the individual circumstances of the room.

In a private home, the owner should consider several factors before deciding at what height to install the light. This includes the use of the light, the height of the ceiling, the height of guests who frequent the home, and how the sconce will appear when standing or sitting.
