Obtain and write down your Norton Internet Security product key before going any further. If you own the CD, the key will be located on the back of the CD sleeve. If the version you have was downloaded, the key will be online in your Norton account profile.
Browse to the Symantec website. Located at the top right of the page is a search box. Type "Norton Removal Tool" without the quotes. This will bring you to a series of results. Click on the first result and then click to download the tool. When the download manager asks where you would like to save the file, choose the desktop.
Stay on the Symantec website and download the English Norton Internet Security package from the product page. As you did with the removal tool, save the file to your desktop so you can easily find it.
Click on "Start" and then "Run." In the run box, type "Msconfig" without the quotes and press "Enter." This will open the Msconfig utility. Click on the "Boot.ini" tab in Windows XP, or the "Boot" tab in Windows Vista and 7. Click in the box next to "Safe Boot" and select the "Network" option. Double check that these settings are selected correctly and are the only ones you have modified, and then press "Apply." A dialogue will ask you to reboot your computer; select "Yes." Your computer will now restart in safe mode, preventing Norton files from loading with your operating system. Wait for your computer to restart, and then continue.
Open the Norton Removal Tool you saved to your desktop by double-clicking on the icon. Follow the user friendly prompts and carefully read any instructions. During this time, you may be prompted to restart your computer a few times. Since you are running in safe mode, the amount of restarts should be minimal. Allow the removal tool to finish until no more restarts are necessary.
Set your computer to boot up normally by returning back to "Msconfig" and removing the check from "SafeBoot" on the "Boot" tab. Restart your computer again.
Run the Norton Internet Security install program that you saved to the desktop. When prompted, select the desired language and enter the product key you obtained. Follow the series of prompts to install Norton.
Reboot your computer one last time after the installation is complete. You will now have a clean copy of Norton Internet Security installed in the English language.
Tips and warnings
- If you received a copy of Norton Internet Security from your Internet service provider (ISP), you will likely not have a product key. You may still follow the same procedures detailed in this guide, but you should download the product as you normally would from the ISP website.
- During the installation process, make sure that you have no other security programs running. Other programs could potentially interfere with the installation process and block some of the files from properly installing.
