Lattice is pattern of woodwork that creates oblong diamond shapes by crossing slats over each other. You can buy large sheets of lattice from most hardware stores, but you have to buy the sheet in its entirety and to their specifications. An alternative is to make your own lattice, for when you only need a small amount or want a non-standard size of lattice holes. You can use the wood lattice for privacy or decoration.

Things you need
- Thick foam backer board
- Lattice slats
- Staple gun
Cut a piece of foam to the size you want the lattice. Use a thick foam backer board and cut it with scissors to the size you want.
Lay one lattice slat on the foam so it is at a 45-degree angle. The left end of the slat should point up, while the right end should point down.
Draw a horizontal line on the slat where it intersects with the upper and lower edges of the foam with a marker. This mark will tell you where to cut the slat so it forms the straight edge on the lattice.
Continue to place slats like this until you have as many as you want in this direction. Mark them all as you place them on the foam.
Lay one slat on the foam on top of the previous slats, also at a 45-degree angle, but this time with the right end pointing and the left end pointing down. Continue to cover the first layer with slats angled like this. Mark all of these slats, as well.
Cut each slat along the marked lines with a saw and replace them in the same pattern on top of the foam.
Staple the slats together at each point where they intersect with each other. Use a staple gun to drive the staple through the slats and into the foam backer.
Pull the lattice off the foam board and press down the exposed staple ends. Force the ends flat by pressing them a screwdriver and banging them down with a hammer.
Tips and warnings
- Space slats closer for more privacy and wider for more light and space.
- Do not use your fingers to press the staple ends down or you could injure yourself.
