How to Make an Airsoft Mortar

Updated February 21, 2017

Airsoft is a game of tactics and strategy as much as it is about performing well in a battle scenario. As long as you have the proper equipment, you can use your tactical skill to win battle after battle. One piece of equipment that is showing up more frequently on the Airsoft field is the mortar. A mortar is a ground-mounted launching tube that shoots projectiles (in this case, Nerf footballs) at relatively high velocities. Making your own mortar is fairly easy and straightforward.

Use the hacksaw to cut a 36-inch section of the PVC pipe. Use the silicone adhesive to glue the screw-top adapter to one end of the pipe.

Use the drill to drill a hole 6 inches from the end of the screw-top adapter. Insert the electric grill switch into the hole and glue with the silicone adhesive.

Fire the mortar by dropping a small Nerf football down the tube, making sure it seats down next to the grill switch. Unscrew the cap, spray three bursts of WD-40 into the pipe, screw the cap back on, aim and then press the grill switch button. The fumes of the WD-40 will ignite and fire the football out of the pipe quickly.

You can also load a plastic Easter egg with Airsoft BBs and launch that for a grenade-type effect.
