When remodelling walls, especially when adding tile or wood panel, electrical sockets need to be refitted so the panel is flush with the new wall. An electrical box extension is an inexpensive bridge made out of PVC that fits over the existing electrical box, extending the protection of the box farther out of the wall. Most models have an open end that simply slides over the electrical box. Failure to adjust the position of your outlets may put your home in violation of local electrical or fire codes.

Turn off all power to the outlet by removing the fuse or turning off the breaker circuit in your home's circuit panel.
Open the cover plate of your switch or power outlet with a screwdriver.
Remove the screws from the outlet or switch and gently pull it from the electrical box. Be careful not to loosen or damage the wires. Old wires and wire insulation can be brittle and may damage easily.
Slide the electrical box extension into the electrical box. Line up the screw holes.
Screw the switch or outlet back into position. Make certain that the screws go through both the box extension and the electrical box.
Check your wire connections to make sure they have not become loose.
Restore power to the circuit from the circuit panel.
