PayPal Sandbox is a testing environment used by developers and merchants. It is basically a duplicate copy of the PayPal website, the difference being that no money is actually exchanged. Instructions

  1. 1

Create a test “buyer” account by signing in to your PayPal Sandbox account and choosing the “test accounts” option. Select the “pre-configured” option, and then click the “buyer” radio button. Enter a fictitious e-mail address and password for your test buyer and click the “create account” button.

  2. 2

Create a test “seller” account by navigating back to the “test accounts” page and selecting the “pre-configured” option. Click the “seller” radio button and enter an e-mail address and password for your test seller. Click on the “create account” button.

  3. 3

Navigate back to the “test accounts” page, and under “payment review” click the disabled button for both the buyer and seller accounts. If you have a business account, also click on the disabled button under the “test mode.”

  4. 4

Accept the PayPal billing agreement by clicking on the radio button next to your business account and choosing the “Enter Sandbox Test Site” option. Fill in your test account password and click the “Log-in” button. Scroll down the page until you come to “step 3.” Then click on the “Complete Billing Agreement” and accept the terms of the billing agreement.

  5. 5

Obtain a testing API by choosing the link that says “API Credentials.” Write down the username, password and signature from the API signature window on a sheet of paper and enter these details when you are prompted. Navigate to your own website and start making test purchases using the test buyer account that you created in Step 1.

Tips and warnings

  • To make test purchases using fake credit card details, log in to your Sandbox account and click on “test accounts.” Choose the “view details” option under your fake “buyer” account to view the fake credit card details associated with the test account.
