Laptop computers offer many conveniences due to their small size and portability, but they tend to provide a lower quality multimedia experience than desktop computers. One of the most noticeable shortcomings of many laptops is low sound quality. Since laptops use built in speaker systems and sound cards which must be very small in order to fit into the case, laptop sound quality tends to be bad. Improving laptop sound quality can often be done quickly and easily by adding some extra hardware to the computer.

  1. 1

Update your sound drivers. Fully updating your sound drivers may improve your sound quality without buying any extra hardware. To update drivers, go to the website of your laptop or sound card manufacturer and search for sound drivers related to your specific laptop or sound card model.

  2. 2

Plug external speakers into the laptop when working at a static workstation. If you commonly use your laptop in the same place, such as a desk, plugging in external speakers can greatly increase sound quality.

  3. 3

Plug headphones into the laptop when working in other locations. Headphones usually have good sound quality and volume compared to the standard speakers on a laptop.

  4. 4

Use an external sound card addon. In some cases the sound quality a laptop produces may be limited by the computer's sound card. It is possible to increase sound quality by using external sound cards that can plug into a laptop through a USB or Express Card slot.

Tips and warnings

  • * Headphones are often the least obtrusive and most portable way to improve sound quality. They also allow for good quality sound in public areas.
  • * If you use a laptop to play videos on a TV, consider setting up speakers around the TV that can plug into the laptop--when you use a TV as a secondary display for a laptop the computer only transmits video signals, meaning the laptops audio will still play from the laptops built in speakers unless you use different external speakers.
