How to Make Spirella Cards

You can make a spirella design with the use of string and a pattern with even notches. The notches hold the craft string in place and the spacing between the strings creates an evenly spaced pattern. Make intricate spirella designs through practice and patience. Once you make a spirella design, affix the design to a handmade card. By visiting your local craft store, you can make an inexpensive spirella card for a loved one made from the heart.

Find a template pattern for the spirella design. The template needs evenly spaced notches but can be any design, such as a sunburst. Print or draw the spirella design on plain paper, then glue it to cardstock.

Cut the template out with scissors. Make sure you take the time to make the notches straight and clean.

Use your favourite-colour craft thread to make the spirella. Tape the end of the thread to the backside of the spirella template.

Wrap the string around to the front side of the template. Bring the thread up through one of the notches. Once you wrap the string around the notch, choose a notch directly across from the notch to create a straight line with the thread. Wrap the thread through this notch and back around the backside of the template to the notch next to the first one.

Keep wrapping the string around the spirella design. Wrap the string around the next notch, and wrap it around the notch located directly across. You will keep wrapping the thread back and forth from one side of the template to the other side in a clockwise fashion.

Make sure you continue to wrap the spirella until each notch has two pieces of thread. When you initially wrap the spirella, some notches will not have thread while others will have two pieces of thread. Do not worry because the spirella design will eventually work itself out.

Cut the string once you finish the spirella. All the notches will have two pieces of string and the circle will be complete in the centre. Tape the string to the back of the template to secure it in place.

Tape the spirella the front of a greeting card. This will make a creative and decorative homemade card. You can make your own card by folding a piece of 8 ½ by 11 inch cardstock in half.

Use scissors with scalloped edges to create your own spirella template.
