How to design a hair salon

One of the most exciting parts of launching a new hair salon is designing its interior and exterior. The hair business is all about image, and the image your salon projects will not only determine your clientele, but the amount of money you can charge for your services.

    Choose a colour scheme that suits your target market. If it is a women's salon, choose a vibrant, feminine colour palette. For children's salons, pick bold, bright colours, and for men's or family salons, choose a neutral but attractive colour scheme.

    Decide how many stations you can put in your salon. As a rule, dedicate at least 100 square feet of space for each station, especially if you plan to rent them out to stylists.

    Buy your chairs and stations from a local beauty supplier or an online retailer such as Empire Beauty or Salon Guys. Choose a style that matches your colour scheme, and ensure the equipment is durable.

    Choose a receptionist's desk, and buy decor for your reception area such as potted plants and retail displays for products.

    Place a couch and/or chairs in your waiting area. Put accessories near them, such as a magazine stand or rack, area rug, water cooler and cups, television, and tea and coffee station.

    Pick out salon posters to display and ensure that the models in them reflect your clientele. For example, if you have a natural hair salon, avoid putting up posters of women with relaxed hair or extensions. Alternatively, you can display artwork or decorative mirrors.

    Design the signage for the exterior. Aside from sticking to your landlord's guidelines regarding size and placement, make sure that your signage has your logo and is durable and easy to maintain. You can get custom signage from companies such as Build a Sign and Displays to Go.
