Fashion your own jewellery using homemade photo charms for an instant touch of glam. Hang the charms from a necklace or make a set to attach to a charm bracelet. You can make your own photo charm using images of people or pets, or abstract works of art. You also can use any type of paper, such as wallpaper, wrapping paper, greeting cards or newsprint. Personalise photo charms with images of friends or family members for gifts that will have a loving impact.

  1. 1

Select a 1 1/4-inch wooden checker, 2-inch wooden dreidel or 3/4-inch wooden alphabet tile to use for the base of the photo charm.

  2. 2

Place your chosen photo face up on the work surface. Position the wooden object with the flat, front side directly over the desired image or area you want to display on the charm. Trim around the wood charm base to cut the image to fit the base.

  3. 3

Cover the top flat surface of the wood object with a thin layer of craft glue, using a 1/4-inch wide paint brush. Position the photo over the top of the glue so the edges line up evenly. Press the photo on the glue-covered surface and smooth out any air bubbles. Let the glue dry.

  4. 4

Paint a thin coat of craft sealant over the top of the photo and each side of the wood object to seal the photo in place. Remove any bubbles from the sealant by popping them with the utility knife. Let the sealant dry completely according to the packaging directions.

  5. 5

Squirt a drop or two of dimensional adhesive from a squeeze bottle on a scrap of paper to remove any air bubbles. Outline the edges of the photo with the adhesive. Fill in the centre of the outline with additional adhesive to coat the entire photo. Allow the photo charm time to dry; the length of time depends on the package instructions.

  6. 6

Turn the photo charm over. Attach a charm bail that is 8mm long to the backside of the wood using cyanoacrylate so the open loop end is emerging from the top of the photo charm. Hold the bail in place until the adhesive sets.

Tips and warnings

  • Work in a well-ventilated area as the fumes of the adhesives and sealant can be noxious.
