It's difficult for many job hunters to take time off from work to go on a job interview. Many interviews are held during regular business hours when most people are working. So, should you fake a dentist appointment or come clean? Here are some ideas to consider when you need to take time off for a job interview.

  1. 1

Schedule interviews late in the day. Sometimes, you can take a half day off and just claim it as a half day. Leave early and head over to your interview. This is a useful strategy if your interview requires different clothing--you leave for the day and don't have to come back to work in your interview-wear.

  2. 2

Make a day out of it. If you have a couple of interviews lined up, try to schedule them on the same day and then simply use a vacation day. Of course, give yourself time to get to each interview. But this is a smart way to get the most wear out of your best interview outfit and give yourself multiple changes to get a job--in just one day!

  3. 3

Use your lunch hour. This may not be practical in some cases, but many people are able to swing over to a prospective employer and do an interview while they should be enjoying a salad.

  4. 4

Take a sick day. If you find yourself in an impossible situation, you may have to take a last-minute sick day. Do not tell coworkers about an interview, no matter how close to you they are. A spur-of-the-moment sick day can come in handy when you need to have an interview.

  5. 5

Use the appointment excuse. If you can't do anything else, give your employer as much notice as possible and leave on the basis of an "appointment." It's not really anyone's business what you do, but try to avoid outright lying. It can make it harder to cover up your interview.
