How to Build a Water Fountain

There are several ways to build a water fountain for your lawn or garden, from a simple flower pot fountain to a permanent structure like a pond or a mosaic tiled fountain. Building a pond with a water fountain is not a difficult project, but it is more labour intensive than the flower pot fountains, and less complicated than a mosaic fountain.

  1. 1

Dig a hole that fits the shape and depth of the pond liner. Unless you would like to have a deep pond for koi or plants, select a shallow pond liner from your local home improvement store. Excavate any rocks, roots, or other debris from the hole before you place the liner.

  2. 2

Insert the liner into the hole. Make sure that the liner is level and that the surface beneath it is smooth. The rim of the liner should be just above the surface of the ground.

  3. 3

Mix the mortar and spread a layer on the ground around the perimeter of the liner. Scrape the top of the mortar with the jagged edge of your trowel so the rocks will adhere better. Work in small sections as you place large river rock or slate on top of the mortar around the perimeter of the liner. Stones will help your fountain blend into the landscaping more naturally in addition to adding decorative appeal.

  4. 4

Cover the fountain pump with the nylon stocking to prevent debris from clogging the mechanism. Attach the fountain pump to a brick with the rubber band to keep the pump in place. Place the stocking over the section of pump that creates the fountain spray.

  5. 5

Place the pump in the centre of the pond liner. Place bricks for elevation if needed. Fill the pond liner with water before you turn on the pump. Adjust the spray nozzle for your fountain as you like it.

Tips and warnings

  • Connect the pump to a timer so it will come on and go off automatically.
  • Bury the electrical cord from the liner to the outlet to avoid tripping over it.
