How to Cure Cold Sores Fast

Updated February 21, 2017

A cold sore is a blister that typically develops on the mouth. Also called a fever blister, the cold sore is caused by the herpes virus. The cold sore starts as a small, raised bump on the lip and may cause a slight tingling sensation. The cold sore then develops into a blister and can be both unsightly and painful. A cold sore will normally last for about a week to 10 days. To cure cold sores quickly or to minimise the episode, a sufferer must be aware that one is forming.

Take immediate action if you feel a small bump forming on your lip or feel a tingling sensation on the area. One of the keys to minimising the lifespan of a cold sore is to catch it in its early stages, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Consider a cold sore topical medication, such as the over-the-counter medication Abreva or the prescription Denavir. Consult with your doctor before taking any medications, and discuss the risks with your pharmacist and doctor.

Apply the medication according to its instructions.
