How to put up a general steel building

General Steel Corp. offers a variety of steel structures pre-engineered to the buyer's specifications. Standardised structural components and hardware make most erection procedures common to all General Steel buildings. Smaller and less complex buildings can be erected by the owner. More involved projects will require heavy lifting equipment and an experienced contractor.

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour the concrete foundation to manufacturer's guidelines and set the anchor bolts. Use a transit or level and a level rod to ensure that the foundation is square and level. Make certain that anchor bolts are accurately aligned.

  2. 2

Erect the General Steel building's primary columns and connect them via the girds. Tighten the anchor bolts and set up temporary bracing to hold the structures in place. Assemble rafters on the ground, hoist them and bolt into place.

  3. 3

Install eave struts, girds and purlins. Check both vertical and lateral components with a transit or plumb bob and correct their alignment by adjusting the bracing. Tighten all anchor bolts and connecting bolts.

  4. 4

Pre-assemble the General Steel building's end wall components and bolt them finger-tight. Raise them into position and connect them to the primary structure.

  5. 5

Install diagonal and horizontal load-bracing cables or rods. Anchor them to the columns and cross members with eyebolts, hillside washers, flat washers and nuts. Erect and install the remaining purlins, girds and struts, with fasteners joined loosely. Level and plumb the structure again and then tighten all fittings.

  6. 6

Install R, PBR and/or AW roof and wall sheeting, overlapping the panels at the outside ribs. Apply mastic or continuous tape sealer and screw into place with approved fasteners and neoprene washers to ensure watertightness. Insulate the General Steel building's roof and walls if desired, and then install skylights, flashing, gutters and trim.

Tips and warnings

  • Do as much pre-assembly as possible on the ground, then hoist these substructures into place.
  • Observe manufacturer's recommendations and precautions in unloading and storing building components.
  • Wear eye protection, hardhats, steel-toed boots and heavy gloves when working with steel beams or sheet metal.
