How to Clean a Microwave With Baking Soda

In many homes across America, the microwave serves as the central source for cooking that quick snack or heating up leftovers. It's quick and convenient, but sometimes leaves behind a mess -- especially when busy teens or distracted adults forget to cover items properly. Small splatters may be overlooked until they build up into a greasy coating on the inside of the microwave. However, microwaves are almost as easy to clean as they are to use.

Things you need

  • Baking soda
  • Soft cloth
  • Sponge
  • Basin

    Mix 2 to 4 tbsp of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water. Mix to dissolve thoroughly.

    Remove the turntable and glass plate from the microwave. Soak the glass plate in a basin with the baking soda and water solution while you clean the microwave.

    Saturate a clean soft cloth or sponge with the solution of baking soda and water. Wring out the excess water to prevent dripping.

    Wipe down the interior walls, floor and top of the oven with the baking soda and water solution. Rinse the cloth with water and wipe away the baking soda residue.

    Scrub the glass plate lightly with a soft cloth to remove any remnants of food residue and rinse it clean with plain water. Wipe dry with a soft cloth or paper towel.

    Wipe down all parts of the turntable with a cloth saturated in the baking soda solution. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.

    Replace the turntable and glass plate in the microwave.

Tips and warnings

  • Remove stubborn stuck-on food particles by applying baking soda directly to a damp cloth and scrubbing the area.
  • Baking soda removes stains from tomato sauces, cuts grease and deodorises, too.
  • Always allow the glass turntable to cool before cleaning.
