Bamboo huts are common because of their durability and low construction costs. They require materials that are natural and readily available in some neighbourhoods. Bamboo canes are strong and environmentally-friendly elements which makes them admirable to many people. However, building a small bamboo hut may turn to be a challenging mission without the relevant instructions and guidelines. The process should be carried out following 6 important steps that should be used when constructing a small hut with bamboo.

Things you need
- Bamboo canes
- Palm tree leaves
Draw a layout marking the margins of the hut in the area you want to build the structure. You can mark the corners and the side borders of the hut by drawing lines on the ground. The outline may be any shape of preference to the owner of the hut.
Place strong bamboo canes into holes dug along the borders of the layout. The poles serve as the roof’s support and should be strong enough to sustain its weight. Dig holes of at least 38cm (15 inches) into the ground to ensure the bamboo canes are firmly in place. The canes should be at same intervals around the hut’s layout area. Fill the wall with split canes.
Join the vertical bamboo canes with horizontal canes using bolts at the top. The joints between the vertical and horizontal canes should be at least 8 feet from the ground level. The vertical canes should be at a level height to avoid tilting of the hut’s roof. In case the roof should slide backwards, the heights can differ. Front vertical canes should be at a higher level above the ground than canes placed at the back of the hut.
Raise the roof by joining the light bamboo canes using bolts, diagonally, to create a roof frame. Roofing canes should be light, and preferably split, to avoid overweight. Make the roof by joining several canes at an angle so that they fall diagonally on the horizontal joint. The angle depends on the size of the hut’s roof. Tighten the joints between the horizontal and diagonal canes using bolts.
Lay light horizontal bamboo across the diagonal canes on the roof. The canes should be at close intervals to ensure good cover on the roof. Place a wire mesh over the canes followed by a layer of palm tree leaves.
Cover the floor using a bamboo mat. The weaving style of the floor mat depends on the owner’s choice.
Tips and warnings
- Ensure the roof does not leak during rainy weather by placing a thick layer of palm tree leaves.
- Ensure that all joints are tight to avoid dislocations during windy weather.
- Bamboo canes can be sharp so be careful when cutting and handling them.
