Energy efficient heaters for small rooms

Updated February 21, 2017

Choosing an energy efficient heater for a small room is a cost-effective way to supplement your heat in that room without having to heat the whole house. Most space heaters use either convection heat or radiant heat.

Types of Heaters

Convection heat relies on the circulation of air in the room to heat the room. It takes quite a while and is not very efficient. Some heaters use radiant heat, meaning they emit infrared radiation that heats up objects and people within a direct line of the unit.

While convection heaters make the entire room more comfortable, this does use more energy. Radiant heaters are more efficient if you're just using the room for a little while, or if you are just using one area of the room, for example, a desk in a home office.

Portable home heaters are one of the most common causes of fires in the home. Never leave a heater unattended, and make sure that when it's in use there are no fabrics nearby, it is placed on a level surface and it is not in the way of a door or traffic path.
