What Are the Treatments for Lip Fissures?

Updated April 17, 2017

Many people suffer from chapped lips that crack and split. This can lead to fissures, especially at the corners of the mouth, that appear as tears, cracks or cuts on the lips. Thankfully, there are treatments that can remedy lip fissures.

Bacterial Infection or Virus

DermaDoctor.com reports that lip fissures can be caused by a bacterial infection or virus. Doctors may need to prescribe an antibiotic to remedy these conditions before the fissures will heal.

Coeliac Disease

WrongDiagnosis.com says that coeliac disease, an autoimmune disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract, can cause lip fissures.

Dietary Issues

A diet lacking in vitamin B12 can result in lip fissures. Also, anaemia or low iron levels in the blood are known to cause lip fissures. Vitamin supplements or injections may be prescribed.

Laser Treatment

PubMed.com describes treating lip fissures with laser resurfacing of the lips.

Yeast Infections

LipZing.com informs readers that chronic yeast infections can result in lip fissures. These yeast infections are often a result of treatment of other conditions with antibiotics and will heal once the treatment is completed.
