Wind turbines are gaining popularity as being "green" becomes a more popular way to live. It is a big investment many electric companies are making because they get many government subsidies for going green. Farmers who allow companies to generate electricity on their farm also see subsidies. The trend is catching on with homeowners, too. Not only are wind turbines eco-friendly, but they save money on electricity bills as well.

Prices Vary

Depending on the shape, purchase agreement, size, type of machine and location, the cost of wind turbines vary.

Commercial Turbines

Commercial wind turbines cost between £0.6 million and £1.3 million based on the megawatt nameplate capacity.

Small farm and residential

Small farm and residential turbines cost far less to build or install, but cost more per kilowatt of energy produced.

Kilowatts can be expensive

The price of residential and farm turbines are based on kilowatts, and 10 kilowatts cost £31,200. You can expect to pay between £1,820 and £3,120 per kilowatt with professionally constructed turbines.

Build it Yourself

The good news is there are kits that teach you how to make your own wind turbine for £130 or less. Many find they save £650 a year at least using a wind turbine for power.
