Knowing the tire load rating for your vehicle is important when selecting tires because an insufficient rating may result in the tires being unable to bear the weight of the vehicle and cargo. If this is the case, they can overheat and blow out while you are on the road. You should be able to find the required tire load rating in your vehicle's owner's manual, but you can also calculate the rating yourself. Then you can determine the recommended inflation based on the load range of the tires you use.

    Determine the gross weight of your vehicle and cargo.

    Divide the gross weight by four to determine the load requirement for each tire.

  3. 3

    Consult a tire load carrying capacity chart to determine what load rating will accommodate the load for each tire. For example, a tire with a load index of 71 has a load carrying capacity of 345 Kilogram.

    Select tires that have a greater load capacity than what you need for your vehicle so you do not risk insufficient capacity.

  5. 5

    Determine the appropriate inflation of your tires, in pounds per square inch, based on the load range of the tire. There are industry standards for p-metric, Euro-metric, LT-metric and flotation light tires. North American tire manufacturers print these numbers on tires' sidewalls.
