Marketing consultants implement plans and strategies that help clients sell products or services. This includes advertising and public relations initiatives. The consultant researches consumer behaviour and what motivates consumers to take action, such as purchase a product. Then, the consultant uses that research to design approaches specific to a client's needs.

Work Environment

Marketing consultants work closely with a company's advertising and promotions departments or directly with a client, meeting regularly on the phone, through e-mail and in person. Most of the work is done in the traditional office setting and can be deadline oriented. Travel may also be a large part of the job as consultants must meet with clients and colleagues. Long hours are common. According to the U.S. Labor Department, many marketing consultants regularly work more than 40 hours a week.

Education And Experience

Most employers are looking for marketing consultants with at least a four-year bachelor's degree in business with a concentration in marketing. Courses in business, law, finance, advertising and accounting are important. Internships are also valuable. The ability to work in the Internet environment has also become highly advantageous. Other skills highly regarded are fluency in a foreign language, writing, creativity, presentation skills and the ability to communicate persuasively.


Leadership, experience and ability are regarded as key factors for advancement in the field of marketing. But management training programs in the larger firms are also good avenues for promotion. Some organisations and associations related to marketing offer certification programs, which employers see as an indication of competence in the industry. Some marketing consultants with experience and visibility choose to open their own marketing firms.


The latest statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in 200) show the average annual salary for those working as marketing managers or consultants at £70,200. Those working in the field of computers or related industries make the highest yearly salary. Earnings vary greatly depending on the level of management experience, education and the size of the company or firm. According to a 2009 survey by the National Association of College and Employers, the beginning salary for marketing majors after graduation averages nearly £28,275 a year.

Job Outlook

Employment for marketing consultants and related positions were expected to grow by 13 per cent from 2008 through 2018, according to a BLS survey in 2009. And as the traditional marketing avenues of television, radio and newspapers become less influential and effective, marketing consultants offering new creative strategies will have the best opportunities. Also, marketing personnel are many times regarded as highly important positions and are less likely to be affected by outsourcing or downsizing trends.
