Fleas and ticks are a risk to your pet's health; they can lead to Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and flea allergy dermatitis. In small or young pets, these pests can lead to serious blood loss. There are several options for treatment and prevention out there, but if the flea and tick situation is serious, it's best to take all precautions. Sometimes a shampoo or collar may not be enough for a household infestation.

There are several types of flea and tick control, but the most effective way to get rid of fleas and ticks altogether is to protect your pet as well as your home. Some over-the-counter treatments can be used in conjunction with medically prescribed methods. If you discover fleas or ticks on your dog, you may want to consider a household treatment to prevent further breeding and repopulation.

Over-the-Counter Treatments

Flea and tick collars may be used in addition to other flea and tick preventatives or alone, and can be an effective guard against fleas and ticks. BioSpot Flea and Tick Collar will kill fleas and ticks not only around the neck, but on your pet's entire body. It lasts for five months and is a quick fix for a flea and tick problem. Its active ingredient is Propoxur, which is an insecticide. Preventic Tick Collar does not kill fleas, but will eliminate ticks. Some over-the-counter options for direct pet treatment include Adams Flea and Tick Collar, Hartz Ultra Guard Reflecting Flea and Tick Collar and Zodiac 5-Month Flea and Tick Collar. All of these are made specifically for dogs and are safe. A flea and tick collar will probably be effective in killing and preventing fleas and ticks on your dog, but if your dog spends time indoors, using a home treatment would be advisable.

Flea and tick shampoos will kill fleas and ticks, but for long-term prevention, you should consider more effective treatments. If you regularly bathe your pet, or for a pet that frequently swims or plays outside, a flea and tick shampoo can be useful.

Perfect Coat Flea and Tick Shampoo or Drs Foster and Smith Flea and Tick shampoo are effective options. You can also find all-natural holistic flea and tick shampoos, like Bobbi Panter's Charlie Dog All Natural Flea and Tick Shampoo or Only Natural Pet Store's Herbal Defense Shampoo and Conditioner.

Prescription Treatments

Monthly prescribed treatments have proven effective in killing and preventing fleas and ticks. You simply apply the treatment in between your pet's shoulder blades once a month. It is important to remember when you administered the medication because you can give your pet an overdose. Some of the best options include Frontline, K9 Advantix or Advantage. The medication will not wash off and is effective for a month. These medications are safe for your dog and dosages are prescribed by weight.

Oral flea and tick control, another form of prescribed monthly control, uses an IDI, or an insect development inhibitor, to stop flea and tick life cycles at the egg and larvae stage. These medications prove effective in flea and tick prevention but may not be as effective as topical monthly treatments. Like topical treatments, oral flea and tick controls are administered once a month and are prescribed according to your pet's weight. Program Flavor Tabs and Capstar are effective options for oral treatment.

Home Treatments

Household treatments can effectively eliminate fleas and ticks altogether from your home. BioSpot makes a Room Fogger and a Carpet Treatment that use insecticides and pyrethrins to kill fleas and ticks.

You and your pet should evacuate the area for at least 30 minutes, and you should not use these treatments around food or food serving areas. Other options include Flea Trol Carpet Powder, Flea Stop Fogger or Attack All. You can also call a professional exterminator for home treatment.

Some veterinarians suggest that flea and tick prevention only be used during flea season (the warmer months of the year), but using flea and tick protection all year may be advisable. Although a flea problem will worsen during the warm months, ticks are prevalent in the fall. If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, especially in wooded areas, it is recommended that you use this medication all year

If you use a monthly prescribed treatment, you will most likely see a complete elimination of fleas and ticks on your pet. Since fleas can live in furniture and carpets, using household treatments will effectively rid adult insects and any possibility of flea and tick reproduction.
