Outdoor flood lights are used as a means of security for homes and commercial areas since they are capable of lighting large areas. Outdoor flood lights are often used to light car parks and other large areas where security is a concern. They also can be used decoratively to highlight landscaping, decorative siding, ornaments and walkways. Outdoor flood lights are also used to light nighttime work tasks such as an overnight construction job. Each type of outdoor flood lights has its own benefits and advantages.

Solar outdoor flood lights are connected to solar panels that convert solar energy to the energy needed to power the flood light fixture. No electrical wiring is required for a solar outdoor flood light.

Motion-sensor outdoor flood lights turn on when they detect motion within a certain predetermined distance from the light.

Halogen outdoor flood lights are designed to work with typical residential electrical output. The most commonly used outdoor flood light is in industrial areas and produces a cool-coloured blue light. This is a High Intensity Discharge (HID) flood light.

Sensor outdoor flood lights are useful as a means of security. According to Galt Home, the sensitivity of motion-sensor outdoor flood lights can usually be adjusted so they won't be set off by leaves in the wind or anything equally nonthreatening. Halogen flood lights are more often used for security than for decorative purposes outdoors.

According to Residential Landscape Lighting & Design, halogen flood lights offer the advantage of immediately switching on as opposed to needing any time to warm up before illuminating. Halogen outdoor flood lights also emit a bright light. This aids in their popularity for outdoor security lighting. Solar flood lights are an environmentally friendly option for outdoor lighting. Many of these lights can last weeks in grey weather and still emit a bright light. Fluorescent outdoor flood lights are energy efficient.

Motion-sensor flood lights can be purchased as a new fixture, or a sensor can be added to an existing fixture. HID outdoor flood lights work for security as well as accenting walls, trees or walkways. Unlike halogen lights, High Intensity Discharge lights have to warm up before coming on rather than immediately emitting light. An advantage to HID outdoor flood lights is that they are long lasting. Fluorescent flood lights are available in warm or cool light colours and also are long lasting.

A main benefit to having outdoor flood lights of any type is security. According to Southern California Edison, lighting for the purposes of security deters criminal activity and gives passersby the opportunity to view any scandalous behaviour on your property. In addition to security, outdoor flood lights can highlight and accentuate any landscaping or architectural elements on the property.
