Natural Remedies for Oral Thrush

Oral thrush causes white spots in the mouth that can bleed. The condition is caused by a fungus known as Candida albicans, and can be transmitted to others. Oral thrush can affect children and adults with a weak immune system. Home remedies can be used, but a doctor should be consulted in case there is fever, severe mouth swelling and pain.

Rinse and prevention

One oral thrush home remedy that can provide relief is the use of a saltwater rinse. Three times a day rinse 1/2-teaspoon salt in a cup of water in the mouth after eating.

Boil everything that touches the mouth, such as eating utensils. Boiling will kill bacteria and help prevent spreading the affliction to other family members.

On spot remedies

Goldenseal is a natural antimicrobial plant that can be used as a home remedy for oral thrush. Apply Goldenseal liquid extract to patches of thrush with a cotton swab.

Antiseptic mouthwash works well as another bacteria killing remedy for oral thrush. Swab patches of thrush in the mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash.

Both on spot home remedies can be repeated several times a day until oral thrush is gone.

Anti-Bacterial and Good Bacteria Remedies

Garlic has anti-bacterial properties, while Vitamin C and Vitamin E can be used to boost the immune system. Combined remedies of eating raw garlic and taking vitamin supplements can help fight off an oral thrush infection. Garlic can be taken in supplement form if necessary.

Eating unsweetened yoghurt can promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth and is a good home remedy for oral thrush. Yoghurt can also provide a soothing relief if oral thrush patches are painful.

Preventing dehydration

The mouth can become swollen or painful, causing problems with eating or drinking. Maintain an adequate fluid intake with milk, ice cream, custard, water, tea and other beverages in order to prevent dehydration.
