How to Use Acupuncture to Treat Hair Loss
My name is Brighton Roper, and I'm a licensed acupuncturist. Today, we are at my clinic, which is called Utah Family Acupuncture and Herbs, located in downtown Salt Lake City. And we are talking about how to treat hair loss with acupuncture. The materials you'll need to treat hair loss with acupuncture are acupuncture needles, alcohol swabs to clean the area and some topical products, such as shampoo or herbal products for the scalp. In terms of Chinese medicine, hair loss has 2 main causes. One has to do with the kidneys. In terms of Chinese medicine, the strength of the kidney chi can be seen in the abundance of the hair. So, in people who started balding, one way of treating them is to support their kidney chi. The other cause for hair loss is related to blood deficiency and sometimes that can happen in postpartum women or situations where someone has just recently lost a lot of blood. So, that's more like temporary hair loss. So, how to treat hair loss is to treat the local area of the scalp with acupuncture needles in addition to some body points as well. So, usually about 5 or 6 scalp points would be chosen and needled to bring chi and blood to the local area. If the cause for hair loss is kidney deficiency, points on the kidney channel will be chosen. And the kidney channel runs along the medial aspect of the leg and up the inner thigh to the abdomen. And there's a point, which is the tonification point for the kidney, so that will help strengthen the kidney's chi, so that will help grow more hair. So, this point is kidney 7, and it's the tonification point of the kidney. In addition to acupuncture, herbal shampoos and topical herbal solutions can be applied to the scalp and massaged in to help bring chi and blood to the local area and encourage hair growth.
