After 365 days of changes for both you and your baby, it's time to celebrate. Birthday parties for a 1-year-old are about commemorating this milestone with friends and family.

But let's be honest, the adults will be more cognitive than the 1-year-old, so choose games that will engage the adults --- and be sure to take lots of photographs.

Baby Photo Mystery

Include in the invitation a request to bring a baby photo of themselves. Collect the pictures as the guests arrive. Hang on a notice board. Label each picture with a number. Place a numbered piece of paper and a pencil at each place setting. During the party, have the guests write who they think each picture belongs to.

Pass the Parcel

Play this simple game by wrapping a small gift several times. It is helpful to use different coloured paper for each layer. In between each layer, place a piece of paper with a message on it. Some messages can be an action to perform, or the chance to pick a prize. Start music and pass the package around. Once the music stops, the person holding it unwraps one layer and reads what the note says. Consider actions like "sing a song," "wear a silly hat" (that you provide) or "answer a question." The person who unwraps the last layer keeps the gift.

Baby Quiz

The people you invite to a baby's first birthday party are usually close friends or family members. So challenge them to answer questions about the kid. Create a list of 20 questions regarding your baby. Start with something easy like the middle name, or birthday. Ask when your 1-year-old started crawling, walking or spoke its first word. Mix some easier multiple-choice questions into the quiz. Have a few questions ready in case you need a tiebreaker. Give a prize for the best score, and maybe a gag gift for the worst score.

Guess How Many

Fill a large clear container with Cheerios, teething biscuits or animal crackers. Count the number of baby snacks as you put them in the container. Give each guest a card or piece of paper. They can write their guess and their name on the card and turn it in to you. The person closest to the actual amount wins a prize. You can keep the jar of snacks for your baby.

Baby Toy Relay

The birthday child will enjoy watching his party guests crawl and laugh while participating in a baby toy relay race. Divide your guests into two teams. Set two laundry baskets on one end of the room. Your guests and a pile of toys on the other. The first player on each team takes a toy and crawls to the basket, drops the toy in the basket and crawls back to tag the next person on their team. The first team to bring all their toys to the basket wins.

Baby Portrait

This game is just for fun. Give each guest crayons and paper. On "Go," players start to draw the baby. Surprise the guests by calling out "Switch" after 30 seconds. Instruct them to pass their unfinished drawing to the person to their right. Keep going, switching every 30 seconds or mix it up to keep everyone on their toes. When finished, combine the drawings into a collage to hang on the wall during the rest of the party.
