Receiving a gift that has been made especially for you is a heart warming experience that can make for a memorable Christmas. Making gifts is also a way to celebrate Christmas. There are numerous ideas for crafting or sewing your way to a beautiful holiday season.

Start with thoughtful ideas based on the hobbies and interests of your friends and family. With planning and patience, you can create special gifts for those special people in your life.

Almost everyone finds joy in a new Christmas ornament. Crystal beads make gorgeous ornaments for trees, windows, or to display on tables and mantles. Shiny, shimmering crystal evokes Christmas in beads that can be formed into snowflakes, angels, crosses, and other symbols of the season. Make a large sparkling star as a tree-topper with clear crystal acrylic beads, or smaller stars hung on gold or silver thread. Beaded napkin rings made of red, green, and clear beads glimmer on any dinner table. Purchase a string of ready strung gold, silver, red, or green beads. Wind and glue them around clear glass votive candle holders to add glamour and a splash of Christmas colour.

Sewing stockings is a simple way to make gifts that will bring smiles all around. Sew stockings to hang from the mantle with material that illustrates a hobby or interest. If your daughter loves horses, use material with horseshoes or related pictures. Hubby a golfer? Sew him a stocking in grassy green material and attach golf tees with red yarn scattered around the stocking. This works also for cooking or swimming, Barbie dolls or tennis. Just use a background stocking colour reminiscent of the hobby, and sew or tie on small related items to decorate the stocking. Then, if you like, stuff the stocking with more items used for the hobby or interest.

Paper and pine

Nothing says Christmas more than the sights and smells of pine and holly. We associate the smell of Christmas trees with many memorable moments, and the sight of bright red holly berries brings pleasant thoughts to mind. Create custom Christmas wrapping paper for your friends by sponge stamping Christmas trees, holly, stockings, or peppermint sticks on a roll of recycled paper. Use bright-coloured paints to make the stamps pop.

Pine cones are a staple of Christmas crafts, and a simple quick gift to make is a small topiary. Just paint a small clay pot in Christmas colours, and paint a large pine cone in gold or silver. Then fit and glue the pine cone to the top and tie a shimmering ribbon around the lip of the pot for added flourish. Scented pine cones waft Christmas through the air, and can be made easily. Place pine cones in a bag, then sprinkle with powdered cinnamon and cloves, and add some dried orange peel for colour.
