What Is Siliconized Polyester Filling?
Filling, or batting, is a thick, often rigid material used to stuff toys, quilts, clothing and other crafts. It is made from a wide variety of materials, including cotton, rayon and polyester. Polyester filling is made from synthetic fibres, unlike cotton filling.
Siliconized polyester filling is a recently developed material that helps aid in preventing allergens, bacteria and dust from attaching to the filling.
Siliconized polyester filler is a type of batting or filler created from synthetic fibre that is treated with a silicate material. This silicate material stiffens the polyester fibres, making them more resistant to bacteria and the accumulation of dust. The fibres help dry up the cell of the dust or bacteria as it comes in contact with the filling. During the manufacturing process, the siliconized polyester fibres are joined to form small balls that are clustered together. The balls can then be used for a variety of filling needs.
Siliconized polyester filling can generally be used as stuffing for many different types of projects. Because it doesn't attract dust, it can be used to fill furniture or accents that come in contact with sensitive areas of your body -- mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags and quilts. Toys for children with dust allergies can also be stuffed with this material. Because all polyester fillings retain heat, only thick, heavy clothing should be filled with this material.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Because siliconized polyester filling has properties that prevent the attachment of dust mites and bacteria, it is considered an antimicrobial and is hypoallergenic. Polyester filling resists moulds and mildews and holds its shape better than cotton filler. Polyester filings are, however, easier to stain than cotton fillings because of the fibres are stiff. Because polyester holds heat items stuffed with this material will not breathe as well as clothing or blankets stuffed with cotton.
Sewing projects and crafts created with siliconized polyester filling require special care when washing or attempting to remove stains. If you have made a pillow using this filling, cover it with a pillow case to make cleaning easier. Materials with siliconized polyester filler are very sensitive to heat, so avoid using an iron, or use a low setting. Because stains cling to siliconized polyester, use a commercially manufactured stain remover and allow it to set into the stain before washing the material. Items made from siliconized polyester can be washed and dried normally or dry cleaned.
