Shopping for a sofa involves many variables: the size of the room, the colour, the budget and of course, the size of the sofa. Knowing what standard sofa dimensions are out there can help expedite the process by eliminating sofas that are too big or too small for the space.
When shopping for a sofa, always bring along measurements of the room and write down what sofa sizes are too big or too small for the space.
Standard sofa dimensions
Standard sofa dimensions vary from company to company, though a common length is around 1.9 m (76 inches). Length can actually vary greatly for a standard sofa, ranging from anywhere around 1.8 to 2.4 m (6 to 8 feet). Depth can also vary greatly, ranging from around 75 cm (30 inches) to upwards of 1 m (40 inches). It should be noted that the greater the depth, the more comfortable the sofa. As for height, height can vary higher or lower from around 77.5 cm (31 inches).
Apartment sofa dimensions
Apartment-sized sofas tend to be smaller than "standard" sofas, as they are meant to fit into smaller spaces in rental flats. Like with standard sofas, the dimensions of an apartment sized sofa can vary. For example, an apartment size sofa can be around 1.6 m (64 inches) in length, with both height and depth varying around 75 to 1 m (30 to 40 inches).
There are no standard sectional dimensions, as there are hundreds if not thousands of different configurations for sectional sofas. However, you can expect the dimensions for the seating to be relatively similar to standard sized sofas, at around 75 to 90 cm (30 to 40 inches) in depth and height. Length and width can vary greatly for these sofas, with some sectional sofas being as long as 4.2 m (14 feet).
Loveseats tend to be smaller versions of sofas that are meant to fit two people, either snuggly or comfortably, depending on the individual sofa. Like standard, apartment and sectional sofas, the depth and height will be 75 cm to 1 m (30 to 40 inches) However, the length will be considerably smaller, ranging from as small as 1.2 m (4 feet) up to 1.8 m (6 feet) in length. Like any other size sofa, many companies will also offer custom sizes so as to best suit the needs of the customer.
