How to Turn a Photo Into a Cartoon in Photoshop

Updated July 20, 2017

Adobe Photoshop is an image editing software used by photographers, print designers, Web designers and other graphic arts specialists. Photoshop software allows you to turn a photo into a cartoon image in just a few steps. The original Photoshop CS as well as Photoshop CS5 or CS5 Extended can be used. Choose a photo that has plenty of edges in it; pictures of people will do best, and flat landscapes with blurry lines the poorest.

  1. Download the photo you want to turn into a cartoon onto your computer. Open Photoshop and convert your image to RGB mode, if necessary. Click "Image" and select "Mode." Choose "RGB" to convert the photo.

  2. Click on "Filters," choose "Artistic" and select "Poster Edges." This will give your picture the edges needed to turn it into a cartoon.

  3. Increase the brightness and contrast of the image for better, edgier results. The goal is to make the image more vivid, so the edges stand out better. Click on "Image," select "Adjustments" and choose "Brightness and Contrast." Raise the brightness to 10 and the contrast to 30. Fine-tune these numbers to the desired effect.

  4. Click on "Filters," select "Artistic" and choose "Cutout" to render your final image into cartoon format.
