Instructions for a BD digital thermometer

Updated April 17, 2017

Taking a patient's temperature, especially that of a small child, can be difficult. Not long ago, only medical professionals had accurate digital thermometers. Fortunately, you can now bring the accuracy and convenience into your home with the BD digital thermometer. This sturdy medical device enables you to accurately and quickly record a patient's temperature. Forget looking at the clock while you comfort your sick child. The BD digital thermometer notifies you when it completes the temperature reading with a series of short beeps. Using the BD thermometer is simple; you just need to follow a few brief instructions to ensure an accurate reading.

  1. Press the power button on the thermometer, located directly next to the display screen. You should hear a series of short beeps and see five zeros appear on the lighted screen. The display of zeros and confirmation beeps let you know that your BD thermometer is working properly.

  2. Wait until the display screen begins flashing. This may take up to three seconds. If you previously used the thermometer, the most recent temperature recorded will appear in the display screen for the three-second period. Do not attempt to record the patient's temperature until you see an empty display screen flashing without any numbers.

  3. Place the thermometer under the patient's tongue, next to the last back molar. Secure the patient's mouth to ensure the thermometer doesn't change positions or slide around. Moving the tip of the thermometer can compromise the accuracy of the temperature reading. While the thermometer is recording, you should hear a series of evenly spaced beeps for approximately one minute.

  4. Listen for three successive beeps. These signal indicate completion of the temperature reading.

  5. Remove the thermometer from the patient's mouth and record the temperature. Call your doctor immediately if the reading is over 37.8 degrees Celsius.

  6. Clean the thermometer tip with warm, soapy water immediately after use to prevent infecting another person.

  7. Tip

Monitor your child during the temperature reading. Proper supervision ensures a more accurate reading and reduces the risk of improper use or biting.
