How to Unlock Virgin Mobiles

When you purchase a mobile phone from Virgin Mobile, the phone is locked to one specific network. In order to unlock it, you need an unlock code. If you live outside the U.S., this is relatively simple, as most Virgin Mobile phones are Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phones. If you live in the U.S.

, however, Virgin Mobile phones are CDMA phones, which are considerably more difficult to unlock than their GSM counterparts. Still, GSM or CDMA, to unlock your phone, you need to know its International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. For GSM phones, you may need a subscriber identity module (SIM) card from another network.

Contact the network provider you wish to connect your phone to and see if they are willing to activate the phone on their network.

Dial *#06# on your phone's keypad to bring up the IMEI number. Write this number down.

Visit a website that offers CDMA unlocking software. Purchase and download it to your computer, or order a kit and download the software when the kit arrives. You can see a list of websites that offer CDMA unlocking software or kits in Resources.

Launch the CDMA unlocking software. Enter your phone's IMEI number when prompted, and the software should provide you with a code.

Hook your phone up to your computer with a USB cable. Turn the phone on, then enter in the unlock code provided by the software.

Dial *#06# on your phone's keypad to bring up the IMEI number. Write this number down.

Contact Virgin Mobile and provide them with your phone's IMEI number. Request an unlock code, though be aware that they may choose to not provide you with one.

Navigate to a website that sells unlock codes. You can find a list of sites that sell unlock codes in Resources. Provide the site with your phone's IMEI number and purchase an unlock code.

Use the unlock code to unlock your phone. The exact method for doing this depends on the model of phone you own. A common method among many phones is to remove the battery pack from the back of the phone and remove the current SIM card. Place a SIM card from another network in place of the old one. Turn the phone on and enter the unlock code when prompted.
