How to Get Rid of Marionette Lines Without Surgery

Updated February 21, 2017

Some people age gracefully, looking and feeling beautiful well into their golden years. If you suffer from noticeable marionette lines, getting older can be much harder for you. Also called laugh lines, these wrinkles appear around the mouth and chin, and most people who live with them are not amused. For many dealing with these signs of ageing, surgery is completely out of the question. Whether it's price or preference, you may be forced to find alternatives to plastic surgery for minimising embarrassing marionette lines. Proper facial exercises and certain beauty products can help to lessen the effects of laugh lines and make them less visible.

  1. Sit comfortably in a chair with a medium to low back, so that you can tilt your head backwards over the back of the chair. This is the starting position for most facial exercises. Exercise strengthens the muscles in the face and encourages oxygen and nutrients to flow to that area, which results in less sagging and wrinkling.

  2. Tilt your head back far enough so that you are looking at the ceiling. Make a motion with your mouth as if you are chewing. Repeat for 20 minutes at least once per day for best results.

  3. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Purse your lips as if you are kissing someone. Purse and release 10 times, then bring your head back to a normal position. Repeat tilting and pursing five times, at least once per day.

  4. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Purse your lips as before. Stick out your tongue, and try to touch your chin with your tongue, stretching as far as you can go. Hold this position for a count of 10, then return to a normal position. Repeat five times, at least once per day.

  5. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling. Purse your lips and stretch your lower lip as far above your upper lip as is possible. Hold this position for a count of five, then return to a normal position. Repeat five times, at least once per day.

  6. Apply concealer make-up to your face to soften marionette lines. A soft, light coloured concealer reflects light, reducing the depth and intensity of laugh lines. Dab a little concealer onto your ring finger and smooth over lines, applying more as needed.

  7. Bring attention to other areas of your face, which reduces the look of marionette lines. Apply a smooth layer of light blush to your cheeks, starting in the centre of cheeks and blending outwards to match the colour of the rest of your face. This accentuates the roundness of your cheeks and draws attention from your laugh lines.

  8. Purchase a collagen-stimulating product from your health and beauty aids store or pharmacy. These products simulate the effects of plastic surgery by improving the strength and resilience of skin. Apply according to product directions to your laugh lines.

  9. Tip

Increasing your daily intake of vitamin C can help your body produce more collagen, which promotes the strength of skin and prevents wrinkling and sagging.
