How to reduce swelling with home remedies

Swelling in the body can be caused by many things. Sports injuries, poor circulation, arthritic conditions, insect bites and allergic reactions are some of the most common causes. Swelling occurs when fluid drains into the body tissue and hinders proper circulation. Fortunately, there are several home remedies that are effective in treating this condition. The following steps will explain how to reduce swelling with home remedies.

  1. For swelling caused by an injury, rest, ice, compression and elevation are the most effective remedies. Place ice packs around the swollen area. Wrap a cloth bandage around the ice packs, securing them to the swollen area. This will provide compression. Elevate the swollen limb so that it is above heart level. Leave the ice packs on for 30 minutes, then remove the packs and wrap again with a bandage to compress the swelling. Reapply the ice packs in one hour, and repeat the cycle.

  2. Consume ginger. Ginger is known for its natural ability to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Take two ginger capsules before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Ginger may also be taken in a liquid form by adding 1/2 teaspoon ginger powder to 236ml of hot water. Ginger works as a blood thinner and will help reduce the pooling of blood in a swollen region. People on prescription blood thinners should contact a physician before taking a ginger supplement.

  3. Eat pineapple. Pineapples contain a high amount of bromelain, which aids in blocking the compounds that cause fluids to pool and swell in the body. Pineapple supplements can be purchased at most health food stores. Consume 500 milligrams of pure pineapple once a day before a meal. Continue for one week or until swelling subsides.

  4. Take a tumeric supplement. Tumeric is a natural herb known to reduce swelling and inflammation. Tumeric may be taken in capsule form and can be purchased at health food stores. Take 500 milligrams before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tumeric is especially helpful in reducing swelling related to arthritic conditions.

  5. Apply aloe. A compound named bradykininase is found in the aloe plant and helps to reduce swelling and bruising. Pure aloe gel should be applied liberally to the swollen area and allowed to dry. Reapply each hour until swelling is reduced. Pure aloe may also be applied to treat swelling and itching caused by bug bites.

    Pure aloe vera juice may be consumed in conjunction with external aloe vera treatment.
