How to make a heart wreath with twigs

According to Liz Burton of Me and my Shadow, you can make a simple rustic heart wreath with silver birch or weeping willow twigs. A simple heart wreath is very quick and easy to make. You can embellish the wreath in many different ways using commonly available decorative items.

  1. Look for supple twigs, as they are easier to work with. Cut them using secateurs. Gather enough to make a wreath of the required thickness. Ensure they are about twice as long as the height you would like the wreath to be.

  2. Gather the twigs into a bundle. Tie one end securely with string. You can also use wire, garden twine, cotton or a pipe cleaner.

  3. Split the twigs in two, further up the bundle. Bend half the twigs over one way to form one of the loops of the heart shape. Secure them in place with a tie. Repeat the process with the other half of the twigs. Bend them in the opposite direction and secure them, to complete the heart shape.

  4. Personalise your heart wreath, if you wish, with further optional choices. Spray the heart wreath with red, gold or silver spray paint. Cover the ties with ribbon or shorter twigs, to hide the mechanics of the wreath. Decorate the wreath with jewels, dried flowers, pom-poms or other embellishments.
