The average salary for a full-time yoga instructor nationwide is approximately £29,250. However, this number can vary substantially based on several factors including where the instructor is located, how often the instructor works and how much the instructor has built an independent business.
It is not unheard of for an instructor to earn over £45,500 if she has built a strong business, according to PayScale.
There are different types of yoga, and this leads to several types of yoga instructors. In many cities across the United States, you will find yoga studios offering Vinyasa flow, power yoga, Iyengar yoga or Bikram yoga. Within each type of yoga, there are various levels of challenge. Depending on the studio, the type of class, and the level of the class, the instructor's pay will vary. More advanced classes will pay instructors more. Geography also plays a key role. More expensive cities where yoga is more popular, such as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, may have higher per- class fees. Instructors in these areas will earn more as the classes cost more to attend.
Some yoga students may think all instructors make the same amount of money. In fact, instructors make different amounts of money for teaching the same class. One instructor with more experience may earn £6 or £13 more each hour for teaching a class. In some studios, instructors are paid on a per -student basis. For example, the instructor may earn £22 for the class plus an additional £1.30 for each student. For this reason, instructors who are able to recruit large numbers of students for class make more money.
It is important to remember that not all yoga instructors consider teaching a full-time job. Many yoga instructors have other careers and teach yoga on the side. Some are personal trainers or nutritionists, but it is also common to find yoga instructors working in office jobs, like Information Technology or sales. Even a full-time yoga instructor may only teach three classes a day, making the work week less than 30 hours. The annual income of a yoga instructor is highly dependent on how often he works.
If you wish to make a career as a full-time yoga instructor, you have the highest earning potential in building your business beyond simply teaching classes. Work to obtain private clients; this is often the highest per-hour revenue source a teacher can expect. You may also offer workshops at a higher per-hour rate than a standard class. Offering retreats to various destinations for a yoga-focused vacation can be both lucrative and enjoyable. Experienced instructors with over seven to ten years in the industry may consider leading a teacher training. Here, you can charge between £1,300 and £1,950 per student in order to train new teachers.
Being a yoga instructor comes with unique benefits beyond a flat salary. One of those benefits is having a highly flexible personal schedule. Another benefit is the ability to build a business around a personal interest. This allows you to write off a number of activities you already enjoy as a business expense. For example, you can write off your yoga clothing purchases, yoga retreats and yoga education classes. All of these benefits can make the life of a yoga instructor very rewarding even if the salary is not the highest.
