Sliding glass doors are a favourite option for modern homes. Their design allows lots of natural light into a room, while offering exceptional durability. Since these doors frequently lead to backyards, decks and patios, you should have window coverings that are equally functional, durable and aesthetically appealing. To maintain this form and function, homeowner's can invest in a variety of mini-blinds for their sliding glass door.

Faux Wood

Faux wood mini blinds have grown in popularity in recent years. They offer the same benefits -- relatively easy to clean and convenient -- as other materials but provide a different look and style. Depending on the manufacturer, they come in a variety of tones, from light wood to dark cherry, and can be custom ordered from some manufacturers. Their design and function are the same as other types of blinds though the pieces are sometimes a bit heavier. Another option is to invest in the real wood variety although these tend to carry a significantly higher cost. Additionally, the faux wood material is generally treated to withstand humid weather, a bonus over real wood, which tends to warp under these conditions.

Panel Track

Manufactured through Levolor, panel track blinds work well on most sliding glass doors and give the appearance of a room divider. They are large panels of cloth that are rolled individually to cover the window. A different take on traditional mini-blinds, they are made from a synthetic fabric called Origami. It is a woven fabric that allows some visibility when closed, can be washed like normal drapes and comes in five different colours. The track is one of the thinnest, lightest weight available and can stand alone or be covered with a valance. The standard panel size is 25 x 37 inches and can be customised through the company.

Fabric and Vinyl

Perhaps the most common types of mini blinds, fabric and vinyl offer a variety of textures, patterns and colours. These are possibly the most versatile and widely available materials and are often the most inexpensive as well. Since so many options exist, finding something to match a home's style is difficult. These materials are often fairly easy to replace if damaged and can normally be cleaned easily. They tend to be tough, durable and won't warp in sun, heat or humidity. They provide other advantages in that they tend to block out significant amounts of light and can often be installed by even inexperienced buyers.
