Single, full and queen bed frames are easy to adjust to fit your new mattress so you don't have to run out and purchase a whole new frame every time you purchase a different size mattress. Of course, in order for the adjustable bed frame to be of use, you need to know how to convert it from one size to the next. As long as you are strong enough to lift your mattress and box springs off of the frame, you can adjust the frame without the help of anyone else in about 30 minutes.

  1. 1

Loosen the clamps that are on the crossbars of the bed frame. These clamps are located in the middle of the crossbars where the bars from each side of the frame overlap. Use pliers to get a good grip on the head of the screw used to fasten the clamp if you can't loosen it by hand.

  2. 2

Slide each clamp onto one half of the crossbar, effectively freeing the other half.

  3. 3

Pull the sides of the adjustable bed frame out away from each other to make it larger, or push them in closer to make it smaller. Use a tape measure to get the sides the right distance apart for your mattress. A single mattress is 39 inches wide, so the side bars of the bed frame need to be 39 inches apart. The bars need to be 54 inches apart for a full and 60 inches apart for a queen. Check this measurement at the head and the foot of the bed frame to ensure that both are the same distance apart.

  4. 4

Bring the two halves of the crossbars together again so they overlap in the centre. Slide the clamp of each bar over the middle where the two halves overlap. Check the distance between the sides of the frame one last time before tightening the screw of each clamp to hold the frame together at the proper size. Sometimes moving the two halves of the crossbars into place can cause the sides of the frame to move out of position.

Tips and warnings

  • An adjustable bed frame can be fit to a mattress by one person, but having another person to help you makes the job much simpler, as the second person can keep the sides of the frame in position as you fasten the crossbars in place.
  • Adjustable bed frames have two or three crossbars depending on the manufacturer.
