Extruders are tools that are used to shape strands of malleable substances, typically clay. You can create an extruder at home with basic materials available at hardware stores.

The body would be constructed of a PVC elbow. The smooth surface of the PVC keeps the substance being extruded from sticking. A lever is attached by a hinge at the top of the elbow. This acts as the actuator for the plunger.

The plunger is made out of a piece of plastic bent at exactly the same angle as the PVC elbow. This allows it to go through the elbow without a hitch. One end of the plunger attaches to the hinged lever and the other is constructed of a hard plastic disk that is just barely small enough to fit through the elbow.

End Cap

A threaded end cap is placed over the exit hole of the extruder. Crafters can cut different designs out of each end cap interchange them by screwing them on.
