Halloween is the one holiday of the year when everything dark, creepy and macabre is celebrated. Many people show their dark sides on this day by putting on a simple face mask; others show it by dressing up in elaborate costumes meant to frighten and confuse onlookers. If you belong to the latter group, then you may want to try making one of these homemade optical illusion costumes.

Headless Body Costume

Find three old items of clothing -- for instance, a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and gloves -- that are larger than what you normally wear. Stuff the shirt (sleeves and the top half of the shirt) and gloves with cotton batting or fiberfill, which is much lighter and cooler. Insert the filled gloves into the ends of the sleeves and secure them by sewing or using fabric glue. Glue a circle of cardboard into the neck opening of the shirt and cover it with fake blood and other gory decor. Lastly, cut small eye openings out of the front of the shirt. Optionally cut unobtrusive slits under the shirt's armpits so you can step out of character to use your arms when necessary. On Halloween night, put on the trousers and the shirt. The entire top half of your body will be under the shirt, so you will not be able to move your arms, but the creepy effect will be priceless. On Halloween night, put on the trousers and the shirt. Upside-Down Costume

The upside-down costume gives the wearer the appearance that he is walking upside down. You need five items for this costume: long-sleeved shirt, sweatpants, gloves, shoes and a mask. Put the trousers (which should be roomy or stretchy enough to fit your entire torso) on the top half of your body and the shirt (which should have sleeves long enough to cover your legs) on the bottom half. Glue or tie the mask to your pelvic area. Lastly, put the gloves on your feet and the shoes on your hands. Cut eye holes in the trousers so you can see. People will not be able to tell your top from your bottom at first glance.

Backwards Costume

This very easy optical illusion costume makes onlookers think you are walking backwards when you are actually walking forwards. You need a pair of trousers, a long-sleeve shirt, two pairs of shoes and a full head-covering mask. Put the trousers and shirt on backwards. Glue or tape the shoes together so that one pair faces forward and the other pair faces the exact opposite direction. Cut eye openings in the back of the mask. Put the mask on backwards. Put on the shoes. For an added effect, you may want to keep your arms inside the shirt and stuff the sleeves with cotton so that your arms do not move.

Carried Away Costume

This more complex costume produces a truly perplexing optical illusion. This costume will give the appearance that another person (or a creature) is carrying you. You will need a full-head covering mask, two shirts (one or both long-sleeved), gloves, two pairs of trousers and two pairs of shoes. Stuff the mask, gloves, one long-sleeved shirt, one pair of trousers and one pair of shoes with fiberfill. Using tape or glue, attach the stuffed mask and gloves to the stuffed shirt. Attach the stuffed shoes to the stuffed trousers. Glue the stuffed gloves and sleeves to the other, unfilled shirt. Attach the stuffed trousers with shoes to the unfilled shirt. Put on the other trousers and shoes, Insert your torso through the unfilled shirt. Now you look like a monster is carrying you.

Stuff the mask, gloves, one long-sleeved shirt, one pair of trousers and one pair of shoes with cotton fiberfill. Using tape or glue, attach the stuffed mask and gloves to the stuffed shirt. Also, attach the stuffed shoes to the stuffed trousers. Glue the stuffed gloves and sleeves to the other, unfilled shirt, then attach the stuffed trousers with shoes to the unfilled shirt. Put on the other trousers and shoes, then insert your torso through the unfilled shirt. Now, you look like you are being carried by a monster.
