Homemade Costume Ideas for Thing 1 & Thing 2

Updated May 03, 2018

Thing 1 and Thing 2 are characters from the Dr. Seuss book, "The Cat in the Hat." These two characters are unleashed by The Cat in the Hat to help clean up the mess the cat made in the house of two young children. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are mischievous and get into more trouble before they're rounded up.

The Outfit

Thing 1 and Thing 2 dress in red. There are a few ways you can get the Thing 1 and Thing 2 look going. The easiest: Purchase a pair of plain, red, footed pyjamas. This works great for younger kids. Older children and adults will need to find a pair of red trousers and a long-sleeved red top. Use sweatsuits or plain trousers with a red turtleneck or sweater. As long as everything is plain red, you have the basic outfit for your Thing 1 and Thing 2 costume. Make sure you have two sets.

The Logo

The logos for the front of Thing 1's and Thing 2's shirts are white and shaped like a circle. Trace around the edge of a large bowl on a piece of white felt or construction paper. Cut out the circle. Remember: You need two of them. Use a permanent marker to write "Thing 1" on one of the circles and "Thing 2" on the second circle. Attach the felt logo to the front of your red shirt with some Velcro. Attach the paper logo with duct tape rolled up in the back of it.

The Hair and Face

Thing 1 and Thing 2 have fluffy blue hair. For this part of the costume, you'll need a wig. If you can't find a blue wig, you can dye a blonde wig. If you don't mind using blue hairspray that comes out at Halloween, spray that on your hair and tease it up. For the face, you need white clown paint. Rub the white face paint all over your face. This is all you really need to do to your face to look like Thing 1 and Thing 2. Your costume is now complete.
