The Alba DVD player's operating system shares a locking mechanism present in other minor brand DVD players--preventing it from playing a DVD made for use in another part of the world. Unlocking the Alba DVD player allows the operating system to bypass this and play the DVD. The remote that comes with the Alba and a commercial DVD (of any kind, movie or TV show) are all that is needed. Neither the DVD player nor the DVD being played will be negatively affected by the player having been unlocked.
