Marmoleum Stain Removal

Written by mel frank | 13/05/2017

Marmoleum is similar to linoleum flooring, except it is made with a natural linseed oil instead of chemically based ingredients. Removing stains from this flooring can be fairly easy when you implement the proper stain-removing procedure. Retail cleaning products work effectively, but an inexpensive homemade solution will work just as well, while saving you money.

Dish Detergent

You can remove most mild stains with a simple dish detergent solution. This detergent is safe enough to use as a daily cleaning product, yet strong enough to break up dirt, grease and stains. In a bucket, mix a solution of 1 gallon hot water and five squirts of liquid dish detergent. Stir the solution until suds form, then dip a mop or sponge in the solution. Scrub away at the stain until it has been fully removed, then go over the stain with a mop or sponge dipped in clear water to remove any remaining residue.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a bit stronger and will work to disinfect and deodorise. In a bucket, mix a solution of 1 gallon hot water and 1 cup distilled white vinegar. Apply this to the stain using a sponge or mop, and scrub until the entire stain has been removed. Use this solution as a daily floor cleaner, as it will polish the Marmoleum floors and create a streak-free shine.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide works well for removing ink-based stains like pens, marker and newsprint. Mix a spray-on solution by adding 1 cup cold water and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle. Spray this directly onto the stain, let it sit for a few seconds, then scrub away the stain with a soft cloth or sponge. Repeat as needed until the stain has been removed completely. Rubbing alcohol is also an effective alternative that will remove ink-based stains from Marmoleum flooring.
