Naturopathy promotes use of the most natural, least invasive treatments available. "Glue ear," or Otitis Media, is a condition well-suited to the principles of Naturopathy as the most highly recommended solution---by alternative and conventional doctors alike---is time.
Glue Ear mainly affects children between the ages of 6 months and 7 years. The Eustachian tube of the ear, normally filled with air, fills with gradually-thickening fluid. Pain, earache, and loss of hearing can result.
Healing Otitis Media can take up to 3 months. In most instances, interference is unnecessary as symptoms tend to resolve themselves.
Autoinflation (the process of blowing up a balloon with the nose) can open the Eustachian tube to drain fluid. This may require several sessions, and is completely non-invasive to the system.
Herbal ear drops, with extracts of Allium sativum, Verbascum thapsus, Calendula flores, and Hypericum perforatum, may be helpful. A 2001 study conducted by the Pediatric and Adolescent Ambulatory Community Clinic of General Health Services concluded these drops "appropriate for the management of [Acute Otitis Media] associated ear pain." (see Reference 3)
A Naturopath may also prescribe homeopathic remedies like Belladonna, Chamomilla, and Mercurius solubilis. These pellets, taken orally, can be used safely in conjunction with complementary treatments.
