Herbal Remedies for Low Libido in Women

Low libido in women can be caused by factors including menopause, stress, fatigue, relationship problems and depression. In conjunction with reducing stress levels, getting more exercise and sleep, and improving diet, herbal remedies can improve libido in women. Taking specific herbs on a daily basis can restore desire and improve energy levels.

To restore libido, take 2 to 4 millilitres of tincture of damiana a day, or drink one cup of damiana tea per day. The leaves of the damiana plant mainly improve the female sexual response, though they may help both sexes. Damiana acts as a natural antidepressant, which is helpful if loss of interest has a basis in an emotional component such as depression or stress.

Dong Quai

This herb, which originated in Asia, has the ability to revitalise the sexual organs. In addition, it is the closest herbal equivalent to oestrogen available, making it a superb supplement for low libido in women. Dong quai is commonly used to treat symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, breast tenderness and menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes. The recommended dosage is one capsule containing 300 mg. three times per day. You may also take a tincture of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon three times daily or as directed on package. Do not use if you are pregnant, nursing, take oral contraceptives or are taking hormone replacement therapy.

Herbs for Hormone Regulation

In addition to taking herbal supplements that specifically target low sex drive in women, it is important to look at the function of specific organs in the body such as the liver, which is responsible for processing sex hormones. Without proper liver function, sexual functioning will not be at its best. Several herbs are useful in cleansing the liver, allowing for better overall health while contributing to a boost in the female libido. Dandelion, milk thistle, burdock and liquorice are all good choices for liver cleansing. These herbs can be commonly found in herbal tea formulations and are available at many health food or natural stores.

Chasteberry has the ability to increase the body's ability to regulate progesterone production and helps to maintain reproductive hormones, in particular the oestrogen-to-progesterone balance. This action may boost sexual functioning levels in women and increase libido.
