Skin Care for Women in Their Twenties

Written by Jessica Anne Elizabeth

By the time most women reach their 20s, adolescent acne has either cleared up, or greatly improved. It is also at about this time that women begin to concentrate more fully on proper skin care. This includes creating and maintaining a skin care regimen that is simple yet still effective, and watching for signs of incipient problems as well as starting corrective measures.

The Facts

Usually, by the time a woman is in her 20s, her skin is going to be in its healthiest state. There are, of course, exceptions to this, but as a general rule, the skin has the greatest amount of collagen, and is at its most elastic. There is usually a healthy glow, and rarely can wrinkles be seen. If there is a problem, it will most likely be with persistent acne. However, studies have found that when persistent acne is still an issue in a twenty-something woman, that it is more likely to be because of hormone fluctuations. This is why certain types of birth control pills are so effective in treating persistent acne.

Basic Care

Women in their 20s need only a very basic cleansing routine to maintain healthy skin. This includes using products that are gentle on the skin, both for cleansing and moisturizing (if this is necessary). A mild facial or body soap that does not contain deodorant or antibacterial ingredients often works fine as a cleansing agent for a woman's face. Choosing one with a small amount of moisturizer eliminates the need for additional moisturizer in a cleanser, unless the woman has dry skin. From there, a light moisturizer applied to the face each time it is washed will prevent dryness. A little extra applied under the eyes will help keep dark circles from forming, and will alleviate excess dryness that can sometimes occur here. Additionally, any good skin care routine should involve the use of a sunscreen. This is particularly true for a woman in her 20s, who may not yet be aware of the full damage the sun can wreak on her skin.

Effects

Developing good skin care habits in the 20s eliminates or at least diminishes skin problems as a woman ages. Further, anything that is being done at this time of a woman's life will have a proactive effect, rather than a reactive effect.

Benefits

Starting and continuing good skin care in your 20s minimizes long-term signs of aging and create healthy habits that will last well into a woman's later life. Healthy skin can also cause a boost in a woman's self esteem.

Considerations

If a woman is going to have a skin problem in her 20s, it will most likely either be persistent acne, or a condition known as pre-rosacea. Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by unusual redness in the cheeks, and red spots on other areas of the face. If these symptoms are noted, a woman may want to consult a dermatologist, as treatment can begin early to prevent any blossoming condition from worsening.
