Picket fences make a charming and vibrant addition to the garden. Made from wood or plastic, picket fences crave accessories like decorative garden art. Adding vibrant plants and flowers surrounding the fence creates a focal point to the space and lends texture and colour to the garden. When decorating the picket fence, have fun adding unusual elements to the space that creates your own one-of-a-kind design.

Classic, white picket fences create a charming addition to any style or shape of garden, especially with a matching garden gate. White picket fences define the space but still ensure you have an unobstructed view through the slats and into the garden and home. Wood picket fences bare of colour also look attractive and create a neutral, rustic feel to the garden. For a splash of colour paint every other slat in bright hues such as orange, red or yellow. Painting the picket fence a bright blue or purple creates a playful touch to the garden and focal point to the space. During winter painted garden picket fence gives you a burst of much needed colour.

Creeping Vines

When a fence feels stark in the yard, add colour and texture by planting a creeping vine through the pickets. Rambling roses create the cottage feel to the space and grow in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes. Clematis vines like the Italian clematis have a rapid growth rate and twisting, twining growth habit to grow over the picket fence in a short period of time. Their 3-inch wide, lavender blooms emerge in mid summer to last into early fall for a vibrant presence to the fence. For year-round colour, plant an evergreen vine like Carolina jasmine. Growing 10 to 20 feet tall, Carolina jasmine has a moderate to rapid growth rate and spring-blooming, fragrant yellow flowers. Hardy, it is both wind and drought tolerant, two ideal qualities in a creeping vine. Add support to the picket fence by installing wire mesh or heavy-gauge wire.

Dress up the picket fence with garden accessories. Garden art like metal stars mounted to the picket fence create year-round vibrancy to the garden. Painted to match the colour scheme of the fence, they create a cohesive design. Cap the picket fence with birdhouses to attract the winged beauties to the garden. Add colour to the garden by creating an area over the fence for a window box planter. Fill the window box with seasonal plants to echo surrounding plants and flowers. If you crave additional colour, attach pots filled with blooms to the picket fence. Use plant hanger hooks to create a "living" garden wall.
